Such a tragic thing. Reminds everyone that when the shit hits the fan, you will most likely be alone without help. In hindsight, one could say that your life is not worth some robbers stealing your daily cash-float. Just let them have it. You've got insurance. Who cares? At least you are alive. But in the heat of it all, you're attacked, so you just fight back, and this time, you lose against two attackers armed with a gun.

Other possible outcomes if things played out differently:
a. the owner takes control of attacker 1, scans his surroundings and sees attacker 2 coming in, and owner is able to disengage and run away;
b. the owner pushes attacker 1 outside, but then chooses to disengage so that he can call for help, even though he knows his store is now open and vulnerable.

This is why we strive to train to take control over your attacker as quickly as possible, since most attacks involve multiple assailants. Don't sign autographs.

It really is a stark reminder of the difference between sport and street. Sport you are trying to win a competition. Street, you are trying to win by staying alive... and winning sometimes means you defending yourself so that you can create a window of opportunity to disengage and make it to safety. It's difficult to do, especially when we all have ego, etc.

It's an IDEAL we train for and we know it's never perfect in real life. You're lucky if you're HALF as good as your best training day.

Tragic, just tragic.
