hard to say for sure. He went quite limp a few seconds after the student had the rear choke hold on him. Then when the mugger guy was on the ground he didn't budge one bit, as if he was out cold, at least for a few seconds until his buddy helped him come to. Either way, the student was able to choke the fight out of the mugger :)

Was he choked out or just laying there submissively.

heheh! Is it normal for me to enjoy watching bad guys getting their asses handed to them? :) I wonder who was the third guy who entered the picture? It appears he may have been a friend of the would-be mugger. Just another tactical consideration to keep in mind when dealing with a reali-life altercation. Weapons, multiple opponents, exit-strategy, etc. The student is lucky (and I am glad he was ok in the end) that the other guy didn't successfully attack him also. Money can be replaced, and I am the first to tell my students to give whatever the mugger wants. That being said, perhaps it is easier said than done when it happens to you in real life. Your warrior instincts kick in and you want to naturally protect what is yours. It's all about choosing your battles and doing a proper risk assessment. Glad the student knew how to do a rear-strangle to make the threat non-functional.
