wow. Intense situation.
Difficult to close the gap because of the counter.
Normally I would have closed in to tie up the weapon-arm and attacked vitals, aiming for a takedown and control.
That counter made the attack that much more challenging.
The attacker keeping the machete in a high position ready to strike, while holding onto your shirt... even if you try to defend against the shirt grab, or if you try to block the slashes... you are going to get cut.
I would have hoped there was a way for the good guy to make his way OVER the counter, so that he could close the gap.
Yes the counter could also be used as a physical barrier to protect you but you have to be able to fight free from the shirt grab... which we saw was not easy.
Grabbing/platforming on the attacker's hand that is grabbing you by the shirt, and pulling him INTO you may make the attacker off balance and perhaps open up his eyes or throat for a quick attack.
Definitely NOT an easy scenario to get out of. Glad the good guy survived and seems all right.
Excellent example of why we stress two hands on the weapon. In real life you can see how quickly both parties reach for the weapon with both hands. Check out Battleschool videos for other scenario examples of the same situation.
