What would be the best way to improve this situation?

If someone comes from behind and gets a stick across your neck or around your body in a type of choke or bear hug applying a lot of pressure while pulling backwards.

I've been thinking of how to apply the standard rear choke defenses but they don't seem to fit right.

Basic choke jam and roll left or right. best to try and step behind attacker once you move your hips if possible. Get dirty and work same side headlock takedowns.

Watching the rear choke defense again, I think i was over complicating things. The rear choke defense looks like it would work. I'm going to try that this week.

First turn your head to the side to regain breathing then stomp on his foot or smash him in the balls with a back hammer fist.
